Ella, Sri Lanka. 24 January 2025

On Tuesday at 11.45 am we boarded the train from Kandy to Ella, another hill country town, which would take 7 hours.  The train was very comfortable and we settled in for the journey armed with Marmite rolls and slices of cake.

After about 3 hours we stopped at a station where many passengers got off and new ones got on.  Paul decided to move our luggage to the other end of the carriage so that it was closer to the door and whilst doing so, he heard someone call his name.  It was a lady who used to attend his yoga classes many years ago before she moved out of the area.  What are the chances you might think.  But bizarrely when we were in Kerala in India in 2007, she happened to be in a cafe when we walked past.  Anyway, much catching up was done before she got off a few stations before us.

The journey was very scenic and we pulled into Ella station just as the sun was going down.

Yesterday we decided to get a tuk tuk to the trailhead to hike up Little Adam's Peak.  We were far from alone and it was more of a procession up the numerous steps to the summit which took around 45 minutes.  From the top, another peak was visible but meant a steep muddy descent before scrambling up the other side.  Sue sat and waited while Paul opted to go across with some other hardy souls.  He regretted wearing sandals rather than walking boots.

This morning we took another tuk tuk to the Nine Arches Bridge, another busy tourist attraction, hanging around to see a train cross the bridge.  And then a leisurely 3.5 km stroll back along the track into town.

We stayed in a small guesthouse in Ella with stunning views from the balcony and an equally stunning breakfast.
