Mirissa and Galle Fort, Sri Lanka 2nd February 2025

Since our last post,  we have travelled further round the south coast,  first stopping at Mirissa,  a beach town,   We stayed at a hotel 10 minutes walk from the town and beach and were taken aback when we arrived to see that reception was up 2 steep staircases although we could see a "cable car" at the side.   Our luggage and us were loaded into the car which made a very slow ascent to reception.   However each time we went out and returned to the hotel we took the steps,  pausing for breath along the way.   The good news about being so high were the views from both the room, the restaurant and the rooftop pool,   Although the monkeys found it easy to swing from the trees to the balconies and were adept at trying the door handle to gain entry.

We walked along the beach on the first day but it didn't particularly appeal to us so we had a couple of days spent around the hotel,

We then moved further around the coast and spent a couple of days ar Galle Fort,  a promontory surrounded by ramparts that you can walk around with the middle of the promontory being filled with cobbled streets.  On our first walk around the ramparts we were sidetracked by views down over the cricket ground where there was a test match in progress between Sri Lanka and Australia,  so we sat alongside the locals cheering on Sri Lanka but unfortunately to no avail.  But good to see.

We found a little eatery which is a family home with a few tables in their front garden,  offering 10 curries and rice, enough for 2 people at a price of $12.  It was so good we went back twice!  As we didn't want the chicken curry,  she gave us a tenth veggie curry.

Your hotel room looks lovely and bright. I’m impressed that you used the steps after your initial ride in the cable car. Did you count the number of steps? The swimming pool looks lovely too!
