Hiroshima, Japan 20th March 2025

We docked in the port of Hiroshima early this morning and were on our tour bus by 8.45 am. It was a short drive to the ferry terminal where we boarded the ferry for a ten minute crossing to Miyajima Island.

Miyajima Island is a UNESCO world heritage site, a sacred island with many temples and shrines. The most photographed of which is the Itsukushima Jinja Shrine. Its 50 foot tall Torii Gate is built over water giving it the illusion of floating on the sea at high tide. It was indeed very photogenic and Paul took hundreds of photos from every angle. Sue commented that it (and the whole island) looked very Japanese. Which isn't surprising. We both loved this beautiful island and could have stayed much longer.

The weather was kind to us. Although it was again a very cold start, the sun came out and eventually it climbed to a balmy 15 degrees.

Once we were back aboard the ship we opted to have lunch outside on the top deck where fortunately they have overhead heaters and the offer of blankets if required (although not necessary today).
